  • What educational background and professional qualifications do you look for in an ideal candidate?

Above all, Ruder Finn looks for candidates who are loyal and have a great respect for ethics. We seek exceptional talent who are also persuasive, have an open mind, exhibit an excellent learning spirit and intellectual curiosity, as well as evidence strong ability to identify and develop business opportunities. First-class writing skills are a must. The more senior the position, the more preferred it is to have prior public relations agency experience and the ability to lead and develop multinational teams working on complex projects. 

We do not have special requirements for educational background because we believe that Ruder Finn, as well as the public relations industry, benefits significantly from the inclusion of a broad range of individuals from various backgrounds with unique talents and skills. Public relations-related courses are definitely helpful while other courses and activities that strengthen communications skills and critical thinking, develop insight into inspiring team spirit and demonstrate a thirst for learning of all kinds are essential for doing world-class business.

  • What is the typical professional development path for a new Ruder Finn employee?

Ruder Finn has nine professional levels for PR consultants: assistant account executive, account executive, senior account executive, consultant, senior consultant, associate account director, account director, vice president and executive vice president. You can become a star with the STAR Program, a comprehensive training and development effort for Ruder Finn staff. STAR stands for Strategic Training and Recognition, which supports our commitment to enhancing your professional experience and knowledge by providing opportunities for learning and growth. You will take on increasing levels of responsibility within your original area of specialization, across various practices, across types of roles such as client leadership or knowledge and insights expert and in different parts of the world.

  • Is there career mobility within Ruder Finn?

Yes. Besides being promoted to manage an increasingly larger range of responsibilities, there may be opportunities to transfer to another office within China, or to move to a new office in the APAC region, or around the world, where you would also work full time.

  • How do I apply for a position at Ruder Finn?

 Put together your application package including, but not limited to, an application letter, a current resume, at least two writing/creative assignments, one personal writing sample. Assignments can include proposals, creative material that you have developed during your course of studies, or external projects. These submissions should demonstrate your ability to think strategically and offer in-depth insights. They can include proposals, press releases, speeches, news articles, analysis papers, etc. We also require official education certificates and at least two signed letters of recommendation. Submit all materials as email attachments and in the subject line, write your name and the position for which you are applying.

  • I have submitted my application package. Now what?

Due to the large number of applications we receive, only short-listed applicants will be contacted by email/phone about the status of his or her candidacy after the talent acquisition staff has reviewed all applications. The short-listed applicant can expect to hear from Ruder Finn in one to three weeks upon submitting his/her application for an open opportunity. 

Those selected to move on in the process may be contacted to schedule an interview plus an aptitude test and may be asked back for a second interview—either in person or by telephone—with Ruder Finn hiring managers and/or practice leaders/division heads. Based on the results of these interviews, an offer of employment is extended to the most qualified applicant.

  • How is my application package used and does it remain confidential?

 The information in your application package always remains confidential with Ruder Finn. It will only be shared with members of our staffing department and with the hiring managers who would be overseeing the position(s) you have applied for. The information will be used by us to keep in contact with you regarding your interest in our positions and to evaluate your skills and experience to see if they match the necessary requirements for the positions you have expressed interest in.

If an appropriate opportunity is not immediately available, we will save your information in our database for consideration for future opportunities. Being in our Talent Pool makes it easy for us to search and review your skills and experiences and consider you for multiple potential positions in the future.

  • What are the steps in Ruder Finn's hiring process?

 After an initial screening of your resume by a member of our staffing team, qualified resumes are forwarded to the hiring manager for review. The manager will then request interviews to be set up with those determined to be a good match. A series of interviews, including telephone and on-site, are conducted. 

Interview Process – Interviews at Ruder Finn are traditionally comprised of a phone screening, followed by on-site interviews and an aptitude test.
Please note that some positions may require more rounds of interviews with team members in the relevant practice area.

On-site interview – Our on-site interview format is a series of individual 45- minute-to-an-hour meetings with the talent acquisition team and various members of the hiring team. This method is designed to give candidates a 360 degree view of the department and the role they may be asked to fill.

Interview format – Interview styles vary from group to group and change significantly depending on the role you are seeking and the teams you are meeting with. The majority of interviewers aim to get an understanding of your technical skills as well as the professional experience you have acquired in your current position and through your previous employment history. They will also ask questions to get to know who you are and how you communicate. 

Aptitude test – Ruder Finn's aptitude test varies in format and content depending on the specific requirements from the hiring authority. It generally includes translation, press release and/or speech writing, proposal drafting, etc. The test is conducted on-site or sent to your personal email account if you cannot participate in the on-site test.

  • When will I hear back from Ruder Finn after I've interviewed?

 We aim to get back to candidates within one or two weeks of an interview. Please feel free to reach out to our talent acquisition team if you have questions in the interim.

  • How can I talk to someone about my resume and job interests?

 After you have submitted your resume, if we find a good match with Ruder Finn requirements and qualifications, you will be contacted directly by a member of our talent acquisition team. At that time we will be more than happy to discuss your resume and job interests. While we would like to speak to everyone that has an interest in working at Ruder Finn, the volume of resumes does not allow us to perform this courtesy.

  • There isn't a position currently listed that is the right fit. Should I submit my profile anyway for future openings?

 Yes. By submitting your application, your profile will then be in our database and available to our talent acquisition team to search and review. They may find a future position that matches your qualifications and they will then contact you.
